Identifing Blue and Red Elderberry (Sambucus)

Identifying young Blue and Red Elderberry can be simple if you know what to look for. The stem of the Blue Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is smoother and shinier (left of photo collage), while the Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) stem is duller and covered in hairs that could almost be described as velvet.
